Blanche and Leo
My grandparents. Leo & Blanche Mayer ❤️
They loved New York, travel, stylish clothes, Broadway shows, art, horse racing, card games, luxury cruises, comedy, laughter, socializing with friends and family dinners.
I remember going to their apartment in the Bronx on weekends. My grandmother would serve filet mignon with all the trimmings and my grandfather would tell funny, boisterous stories at the table.
After dinner my grandparents and my parents would sit in the formal living room (none of the kids were allowed to sit on the fancy, high-cushioned pink couch) to tell stories, laugh and talk about what was going on with our family members.
My sister and I, and my cousins if we were all visiting together, would head into the “den,” where we’d watch TV (and try not to look at the bronze sculpture of a topless woman, which felt very awkward to me at the time) and wait for Grandma to come in with dishes of ice cream for the kids to devour while watching TV (what a treat!).
And then, about an hour later, before we left for NJ, she’d come in with a box of chocolates. We could each pick one or two, to cap the night off. (My dad says they had ice cream and chocolate every night.)
They knew how to live, these two. Maybe that’s why they both lived into their late 80s. I hope I have some of what they did, in genes and in spirit.
Cheers to living a good life, my friends!
