Bill Murray
I went to the gym with Bill Murray once. Let me explain…
Bill Murray is of my celebrity sightings, in everyday life. It wasn’t for an interview (oh how I wish) or a special event.
I encountered Bill on a random weekday morning, when I showed up at my 9 am boot camp class in a little strip mall in the NYC suburbs. Bill’s brother was a gym member and decided to bring him along for a workout that day.
He looked just like you’d expect, but what I remember most was his personality. Tom, the gym owner, was a super intense ex-Marine who yelled at us as we did 100s of sit-ups and deadlifts. (I’d never do this now but for some reason, 6 months after my 2nd child was born, it was exactly what I wanted.)
We’d be dying on the gym floor, fully out of breath. Yet there was Bill, loafing around, as if he was on the set of #caddyshack 😅 He couldn’t care less what Tom had to say and was much more interested in goofing around. He’d half-way do the exercises, then trot around the gym mumbling oddities under his breath, for laughs.
I remember being surprised he was like this in real life. My experience with comedians has always been that they’re often pretty serious in everyday situations and conversations. But not Bill, at least on that one morning in that tiny gym. I’ll never forget it.
Fun fact: #billmurray wasn’t the first celeb to stop by this #bootcamp class—another time I worked out with Didi Conn, aka Frenchie from Grease.
