I was a water aerobics instructor.
This is a true fact.
I was 18 and belonged to a local gym in New Jersey, where I'd go on the treadmill, lift light weights and take aerobics classes. They had an indoor pool too, but laps were never my thing.
One day I was in the locker room and I heard a bunch of women's voices coming from the pool area. They seemed to be having a great time, so I peeked my head in.
I saw about a dozen (mostly older) women bobbing around in the water, with special water weights in their hands, laughing up a storm and seemingly having the time of their lives.
I liked their vibe.
Never one to follow traditional paths, I thought to myself, I'd like to hang out with these women. And perhaps I could even get paid to do it.
So I ducked into the manager's office and asked if I could become a water aerobics instructor.
For some reason, she said yes. And my career as a water fitness class instructor was launched! (OK fine, maybe it was more like a gig that lasted a few months.)
I don't know how many calories we actually burned or how much cardiovascular benefits we got from these fitness classes, but I can tell you this -- we loved every minute of our class time.
Cheers to all the women who made it to my class and other water fitness classes and cheers to finding what's fun in life and cashing in on it!
